24 Of course, not all questions are designed to elicit information. Often, even without realising we’re doing it, we use questions as a disguise for statements we don’t wish to make outright, like ‘You’re incompetent’ — questions that are meant to prove how clever we are, or how stupid someone else is. Roger Schwarz, an organisational psychologist and leadership consultant, reminds us that ‘It’s not enough to ask questions. You have to be genuinely curious.’ He advises his clients to adopt the ‘you idiot’ test. It works like this: mentally recite to yourself the question you’re about to ask. At the end of your private question, add the words, ‘you idiot’. If the question still sounds natural, don’t ask it.
